Hong Kong, 13 March 2017 - Dream Cruises, the first-ever Asian luxury cruise line hosted the first-ever Cheongsam Fashion Show at sea, transforming the brand new ship Genting Dream into a runway for 21 selected multitalented crew to showcase 21 distinctive cheongsams handcrafted by Hong Kong’s top bespoke Tailor “Linva Tailor”. The “Art of the Cheongsam” fashion shows will be held onboard Genting Dream on designated sailings in March. As a tribute to this art form in Chinese fashion, a curated selection of bespoke cheongsams are now on exhibition at Deck 8 of Genting Dream, allowing guests to travel back to the Golden Shanghai era in the 1920s.
Cheongsam, also known as Qipao, is the iconic Chinese dress that showcases a woman’s feminine allure and beauty. The cheongsam captures the essence of Chinese women which has endured through centuries. Inspired by Maggie Cheung’s 21 figure hugging cheongsams in the blockbuster classic and exquisite masterpiece – “In the Mood for Love” directed by Wong Kar Wai, Master Tailor Mr. Leung Ching Wah from “Linva Tailor” has designed and handcrafted these 21 cheongsams for the first-ever Cheongsam fashion show at sea.
Born in Guangzhou, Mr. Leung Ching Wah moved to Hong Kong in 1955 for an apprenticeship making Chinese clothing. Until now, he has been devoting himself in this industry for more than 60 years. Having set up Linva Tailor in 1965 in Central where the shop is still currently located, he has no plans to retire as he is proud of tailor-making the perfect cheongsam to fit customers of different body shapes.
The signature classic Shanghai hairstyle and make-up showcased on the cheongsam catwalk was done by Beijing based celebrity make-up artist Ocean Jiang and his team. He is the leading authority in the art of make-up transformations for a number of Chinese movies and films stars. Ocean Jiang was also the Make-up artist of the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2008.
